The author discusses the shock that resulted from the Bronfman lecture given by Russell E. Train in 1970 in which Train discussed the Earth as a living organism and mentioned the dangers of fossil fuels. Train was the first chairman of the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality and the second administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The National Environmental Policy Act was passed several months after Train's speech.
