The authors suggest that accountability through accreditation on the part of public health departments may offer a competitive marketplace advantage for government and encourage improvement of the health care system. They mention that the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) in collaboration with national partners and the public health community will commence a voluntary national accreditation program in 2011.
