  • The article discusses the history of the National Medical Association (NMA), said to be the first national organization of African American physicians, noting its formation in 1895. The objectives of the NMA are noted including information sharing on health issues that affect African Americans and the opposition of discrimination. With the assistance of educator and political leader Booker T. Washington, NMA began publishing the Journal of the NMA in 1909. Physician Charles V. Roman is noted to have been the first editor of the journal.
