The article presents an overview of several research studies which have found that the long term use of prescription heartburn treatments called proton pump inhibitors, which are marketed under various brand names, including Nexium and Prevacid, may lead to a variety of unhealthy side effects, including hip fractures and bacterial infections. A discussion of several other published research studies which have found that a large percentage of proton pump inhibitor prescriptions may be unnecessary is presented.
