The article presents an overview of a pilot program which was developed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2009 to reduce the amount of time that the office typically takes to evaluate patent requests for green technology ideas. Disappointment which has been seen among inventors and among the office's staff members as a result of the office's decision to only approve approximately one third of the patent requests that it has received is discussed. Factors, including the office's patent classification system, which have limited the number of patent requests that get approved, are examined.
