    • The article reports on research which is being conducted in 2010 by several pharmaceutical companies, including Merck & Co Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline, on the role that certain prescription sleep aids may play in overcoming drug addiction by blocking brain peptides called orexins. A discussion of the role that orexins play in the sleep-wake cycle and in the sleep disorder narcolepsy is presented. The impact that the research may have on people who are attempting to become free from drug or alcohol addictions is presented.
