  • New analysis of the Gliese 581 star system suggests that signals previously attributed to two of its six suspected planets actually come from sunspot-like regions on the star itself. The result emphasizes the need for caution amid the recent explosion in exoplanet discoveries. Changes in the way exoplanet research is conducted could help, as upcoming telescopes and space missions move from bulk data-collection to intensive study of candidate planetary systems.
