Resumen de Bilingualism in Belgium

H. Baetens Beardsmore

  • A description is given of the sociopolitical and educational implications of the complex linguistic situation in Belgium with particular reference to aspects of bilingualism prevalent both in the bilingual and the monolingual areas of the country. A historical outline illustrates the origin of the bilingual areas while analysis of recent sociological and legal documents reveals the contradiction between official policy with regard to language and public opinion as well as an attempted explanation for such discrepancy.
