The article discusses the longevity gap between women and men and reasons why women outlive men by 5 to 6 years, a statistical reality that extends back for a generation. Longevity data regarding married men and women also are discussed. Apparent reasons for the discrepancy in longevity between the sexes such as work stress and lifestyle management are ruled out. Genetic aspects of biological degeneration of males and females are discussed. Female longevity is said to benefit from the fact that women are less disposable than men and that women are biologically better able to repair themselves after injury or disease.
