    • The article discusses the U.S. space program, the 2011 retirement of the space shuttle, and the goals and risks associated with privatizing space flight. Failed launches made by the company SpaceX are noted. The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) foresees itself transitioning to its 1960's-like research undertakings and departing from the implementation of manned space flight. Cancellation of the shuttle-replacement and Moon-related Constellation program is noted including the sacrifice of billions of dollars of associated investments.
