  • Resumen
    • The article discusses earthquake detection systems that can detect the earliest stages of an earthquake and sound an alarm to warn people of the danger. According to the author, earthquakes are unique natural disasters because they provide no warning before they strike. He notes that scientists have searched for precursory signs that would allow them to pinpoint where an earthquake will strike, but have yet to find any. Topics include how most traditional systems operate to detect earthquakes, the use of a network of seismometers to identify an earthquake's epicenter quickly, as well as improve predictions of a earthquake's magnitude, and a proposed statewide system in California, called the ShakeAlert System, that would help protect the population and business. INSET: Worldwide Warnings.
