The article discusses the development and release of mosquitoes which have been genetically engineered to produce defective offspring in order to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue viruses. The molecular biologist Anthony James has added genes to Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which will prevent female offspring from flying and is testing the organisms in a secure facility, while researcher Luke Alphey of the biotechnology company Oxitec has released genetically modified insects into the wild. Public reception of trials on genetically modified organisms is examined.
