«Préexcellence de la poésie» is an unpublished, handwritten text by Pierre Reverdy (1889-1960), which has not been acknowledged in the scholarship and the complete works of the poet. The non-dated pages reveal an early instance of criticism on Cubism and the literary Avant-garde by the contemporary of Apollinaire, Braque, and Picasso, in the Parisian post-Symbolist era. In a dozen concise thoughts, in brief note form, Reverdy alludes to the primacy of poetry in the conceptual creation of the graphic arts, the profound meaning of Cubist aesthetic conceived as non-imitative and non-circumstantial practices, the evolution of poetic trends since the end of Symbolism. This article proposes an annotated transcription of the text and a commentary on the aphoristic assessments made by the poet. Our purpose is to show the valuable significance of this text in the Reverdyan corpus and to approximate the date of its composition.
