  • If the text is a "lazy machine" requesting the reader's active cooperation to fill in its gaps, these can have been inadvertently created - or strategically planted. Distinguishing the latter from the former is a first task to be followed within the latter by distinguishing those gaps which create dramatic tension from those which put into question literary representation itself.
