The capitoline Arx has been distinguished from the time of its origin by the presence of sacral areas and cult buildings of great importance. Through a re-examination of the available archaeological data and the ancient sources a number of hypotheses have been confirmed and new identifications proposed. In particular both the Auguraculum and the temple of Iuno Moneta should be included in summa Arce, in the north eastern corner of the hill under the monument of Vittorio Emanuele II. Lower down on the southern slope, in the area of the Franciscan observatory of S. Maria in Aracoeli, the sanctuary of Iside Capitolina was uncovered. Within the area of the Arx two important sanctuaries have now been located that are associated with the Flavian dynasty and the historic fire of the Campidoglio in AD 69: these are the sacellum of Iuppiter Conservator and the temple of Iuppiter Custos. The former was uncovered within the interior of the Palazzo Nuovo of the Museo Capitolino and the latter revealed by two large concrete wall foundations visible in the Aracoeli garden.
