Resumen de Dial up the heat to turn feathers into fertiliser

Michael Slezak

  • More than 5 million tons of chicken feathers are produced globally every year. Changle Chen of the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Anhui Province, and colleagues have found a use for them. Heat chicken feathers to 600 degrees C for 3 hours in arcbon dioxide and two useful substances form: ammonium bicarbonate and carbon micro-spheres. Chen's idea for chicken feathers can be turned into plastic, or hydrogen fuel cells.
