Resumen de Tyras, Olbia and Barbarians in the 3rd Century A.D.

T.V. Krapivina

  • The historical destinies of Olbia Pontica and Tyras in the 3rd century A.D. were much more similar, than it had been considered earlier. At that time the situation in the region was determined mainly by the relations beteen th Roman Empire and the barbarian tribes and remained rather unstable. The following historical parallels between Olbia and Tyras in the 3rd century can be outlined: 1) both cities were not destroyed by Carpi in 214; 2) the traces of destruction dated the first half of the 3rd century were indentical with the conflagration layers containing coins of Alexander Severus (222-235), therefore both can be related with the wars of 232-238; 3) both centerswere rebuilt practically immediately after the desctruction since no interuption of the occupation could be determined. This might be viewed as an indication of the Roman support; ate the same time the home sanctuaries in both centers were not restored; 4) after the second destruction by barbarians in 169 both centers remained unoccupied for a certain period; 5) Tyras and Olbia were repopulated simultaneously during the reing of Diocletian (284-305)
