The article discusses research by geochemist David Hilton on the nature of the geologic rift, or separation of tectonic plates, in east Africa, published in the journal "Geophysical Research Letters" in April 2014. It describes his analysis of the gases helium 3 and neon 22 trapped in rock samples from volcanoes, which he determined supported the view that the rift is caused by a superplume bringing heat up through the Earth's crust.
