In this article the authors discuss aspects of prescription drug abuse by physicians. Topics include the overall rates of substance abuse, which are on par with the rest of the U.S. population, a ballot initiative in California that includes a requirement for random drug testing for physicians, and physician health programs that work with state agencies to monitor participants and direct them to treatment rather than disciplinary action.
