In this article the author discusses why individuals believe in conspiracy theories, such as U.S. president Barack Obama's creation of a fake birth certificate to hide his true identity as a foreigner. Empirical research on the factors influencing conspiratorial thinking presented in the 2014 book "American Conspiracy Theories" by political scientists Joseph E. Uscinski and Joseph M. Parent, including education level, group identity, and occupational status, is discussed at length.
