  • Resumen
    • The article discusses controversial research that suggests individuals who suffer repeated concussions, such as football players, may be at risk for a distinct type of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Topics include a brief profile of former U.S. National Football League player Kevin Turner who was diagnosed with ALS in 2010, but who researchers do not believe has the disease despite suffering symptoms of ALS, the controversy surrounding research that suggests the existence of a separate disorder with exactly the same clinical symptoms as ALS, and what happens inside the brain of individuals who suffer a concussion. INSET: Death of a Neuron.
