The article discusses the awareness of mortality as an influence of human behavior. Particular focus is given to the 2012 book "Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilization," by philosopher Stephen Cave in which he argues that the desire to overcome the death of the body leads humans to pursue activities and achievements that leave lasting legacies, such as art, science, and literature. Also explored is the Terror Management Theory of how humans cope with fear of death.
