  • The article discusses how hospitals are increasing janitors' roles in sanitizing patients' rooms in order to reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases. Topics include how bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is controlled through hand washing, how infectious bacteria cling to many inorganic surfaces, and how vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus can survive on dry surfaces for several years. Additional information is presented on how hospitals are hiring infection-control specialists to maintain cleanliness.
