  • The article discusses the use of citizen science methods in research, focusing on eBird, a project for the U.S. National Audubon Society in which amateur bird watchers collect and report data of bird sightings to determine the migration patterns of various species. The eBird program incorporates online social media features such as those used by Facebook to encourage volunteers to collect and share information. Other citizen science initiatives are described, such as oil spill cleanup monitoring in California, weather pattern observation to predict meningitis risk in Sahel, and the Zooniverse online citizen science platform.
