The article discusses research into the role of the Gulf Stream ocean current in the winter climate of Europe and the potential impacts of global climate change. It was believed that the Gulf Stream carried warm water and air from the tropical Atlantic Ocean to Europe, but some climate models suggest that heat is stored in the oceans near Europe and is released in the winter by winds interacting with surface ocean or by pressure systems. Also discussed is the theory that melting sea ice in the Arctic could shut down the Gulf Stream and models which indicate that meltwater currents will remain primarily near coastlines. The Argo sensor array project which collects temperature and salinity data from the world's oceans is also noted.
