  • The author presents a humorous look at public fears that the world would end on December 21, 2012, as many believed was predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar. He notes that several national governments and leaders were compelled to address the issue and reassure the public that there was little scientific evidence of risk of an apocalypse. He also discusses a similar failed prediction of doomsday in 2011 by evangelist Harold Camping.
