The article discusses advances in genetic sequencing technology that will enable the tracking of outbreaks of the bacteria methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in real-time. An overview of how researchers used genetic sequencing to track a 2011 outbreak of the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC) at the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Clinical Center and a 2011 MRSA outbreak in a hospital in Cambridge, England is presented.
