    • The article discusses the ecological impact of the spread of pathogens from land animals to marine animals. Topics include a parasite found in domestic cats, called Toxoplasma gondii, that has sickened dolphins found stranded in the Mediterranean Sea, research by wildlife pathologist and veterinarian Melissa A. Miller and colleagues that found California sea otters were being infected by a parasite carried by the Virginia opossum, called Sarcocystis neurona, the impact of drug-resistant bacteria on marine animals, and the need for better wastewater purification techniques and the expansion of wetlands that buffer land from sea.
