The authors posit that the U.S. should not have used a sham hepatitis B vaccination project in Abbottabad, Pakistan as a way of gathering information and DNA evidence related to terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. Though the project ultimately led to bin Laden's assassination, the authors point out that the ruse has left many people suspicious of health workers and led to a rise in the number of people refusing legitimate vaccines, which will hurt disease eradication efforts.
