    O presente artigo coloca em foco diversos sentidos e domínios nos quais a noção de crítica foi empregada em disputas pela verdade no saber histórico oitocentista. Para tanto, procura-se descrever algumas das funções desempenhadas em escritos de Ernest Renan (1823-1892), publicados entre os anos de 1849 e 1863, nos quais esse historiador buscou examinar como as religiões já tinham sido estudadas. Narra-se, portanto, um conjunto de prescrições que almejavam determinar como se deveria escrever a história (das religiões) e quem poderia escrevê-la. Por meio da descrição dessa função prescritiva, será possível estabelecer algumas de suas relações com a edificação de modos, conceitos e procedimentos de objetivação do historiador e da historiografia naquele período.

    The hereby article aims to describe a few of the functions performed in the writings of Ernest Renan (1823-1892), published between the years of 1849 and 1863, during which the historian sought to examine how religions had previously been studied. In order to do so, a collection of prescriptions are narrated, in these texts, that long to determine how history (of religions) should be written and who could write it. Through the description of this prescriptive function, it will be possible to establish to an extent its relation to the edification of ways, concepts and procedures of objectivation of the historian and of historiography for that period. Thus, in the course of this study, different senses and domains in which the notion of “critique” has been used in disputes for truth in the 19th century’s knowledge of history come to focus.
