  • In this article the authors discuss aspects of solitary confinement of U.S. prisoners. They argue that the isolation of inmates causes permanent psychological harm and is counterproductive. Topics include research by Craig Haney of the University of California, Santa Cruz documenting mental illness in inmates with no prior issues after solitary confinement, a brief historical overview of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons, and the psychological impact of isolation.
