  • The article discusses a 2010 outbreak of pertussis, or whooping cough, in children who had been fully vaccinated for the disease. It is noted that concerns over pertussis vaccine side effects prompted the transition to an acellular vaccine formula containing a booster, but the outbreak indicated that protection from the inoculation was not long-lasting. The challenges of designing a new vaccine are explored, including research, testing, and parental compliance.
