The article discusses the decline in religion and the increase in number of people without any religious affiliation as of December 2013. It discusses the results of the survey conducted by the German Bertelsmann Foundation in several countries for its Religion Monitor report. Data have revealed a declining trend in religiosity especially among young people. Reasons for the decline in religion are discussed including the spread of democracy and support for separation of state and religion.
