This chapter studies the sentence schemes present in Martin Codax’s seven cantigas using a functionalist methodology. First, we identify the characteristics of the different schemes from the perspective of the number and syntactic functions found at sentence level, and provide a typology of their predicates. Secondly, we compare the results with those from other subsets of Galician-Portuguese secular lyrical poetry, especially cantigas de amigo, cantigas de santuario and parallelistic cantigas. Starting from a shared syntactical structure, the conclusions show that the syntax of Codax’s cantigas presents some specific, singular characteristics that make his work seem even more stimulating and polychromatic.
