  • The article presents an overview of palliative care, which is defined as medical and other services that are offered to terminally ill patients in an effort to ease their physical and psychological pain and any disease associated symptoms. A discussion of misconceptions which members of the general public and medical professionals have about the terms palliative care, hospice and comfort measures, and of cultural norms and societal taboos related to end of life care, is presented.
