    • The article discusses anemia in Puerto Rico at the turn of the 20th century, which was the principal cause of death of Puerto Ricans. Topics include the failure of the Sanitation Board in Puerto Rico to address anemia as a public health problem, U.S. Army physician Lieutenant Bailey K. Ashford, who traveled to Puerto Rico in 1898 to study hookwork infection, and the controversial findings of a study by Ashford and Puerto Rican physicians about the cause of anemia.
