Resumen de The Epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology in Mesoamerica: A Call for Interdisciplinary Research and Action.

Catharina Wesseling, Jennifer Crowe, Christer Hogstedt, Kristina Jakobsson, Rebekah Lucas, David H. Wegman

  • The authors discuss the need for collaborative and interdisciplinary research to address the regional epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu), or Mesoamerican nephropathy (MeN), in Mexico and Central America. They explore several theories about the cause of MeN, including dehydration and heat stress, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and high fructose diet. They also advocate for research on occupational risk factors, biochemical markers, and biopsy analysis.
