Since the beginning of the Century, Kabylia, the main Berber-speaking region of Algeria, has developedan unofficial process oflinguisticpromotion and language planning. Stating first the very particular conditions of Ms dynamic movement (historical, social, and ideological), the arfiele analyzes the main Steps of the process, defining the main protagonists and social vectors, äs well äs the great trends, which all follow from the wish to modernize the language and to lessen the impact of the dominant AraboIslamic culture and ideology. This argument is based on the author's analysis of the work involved in language planning, particularly with regard to modernizing the lexicon and developing a Dritten form of the language. As a conclusion, the author wonders whether the desirefor linguistic autonomy is not symptomatic of a wish for political autonomy among Kabyles.
