Resumen de Norway in the 1990s: a sociolinguistic profile

  • The following article is a survey ofthe present sociolinguistic Situation and the most recent lines of development in Norwegian and of the Norwegian language society. It takes up dialectal innovations and spoken language Variation more generally and, furthermore, issues of sex and gender, of address and politeness, and of spoken language usage in radio and television programs. Moreover, it goes into multilingualism in Norway, focusing on the old indigenous Sami language communities, but even paying attention to the Finnish minorities and the Situation ofthe many Immigrant languages and language users, mentioning also the users of sign language. Foreign language learning andskills and the dominance ofEnglish are also described and discussed, äs is the postwar relationship between the two official written codes of Norwegian, Bokmäl and Nynorsk. The survey may be read äs an updating of some of Professor Einar Haugen's well-known studies in and introductions to the Norwegian language Situation
