  Desde su publicación en 1966, la atención suscitada por Las palabras y las cosas se ha centrado en dos ejes fundamentales: por un lado, la caracterización de las epistemes históricas y sus discontinuidades y, por otro, el diagnóstico de la muerte del hombre que se despliega en sus páginas finales. Sin embargo, esos diagnósticos se asientan de modo fundamental en el recorrido que Foucault efectúa sobre los modos históricos de funcionamiento y constitución del signo y del lenguaje. Tan solo a partir de ellos puede verse cómo la discontinuidad de las epistemes tantas veces señalada se asienta en diversos movimientos de retorno. Esa doble dimensión de corte y retorno permite subrayar la estructura nietzscheana inherente a la metodología arqueológica. Por otro lado, la apuesta de Foucault por abandonar el espacio antropológico pasará, como veremos, por la tentativa de explorar los posibles espacios de pensamiento que abre la literatura.

  Since the publication in 1966, the attention provoked by The order of things has been focused on two fundamental axes: on the one hand, the characterization of the historical epistemes and its discontinuities and, on the other hand, the diagnosis of the death of the man that unfolds at the end of the book. Nevertheless, as we’ll see, these diagnoses are also based on the analysis of the historical constitution of the sign and of the language. Taking this perspective, we will be able to show how apart from the characterization of the three epistemes the book is crossed by some movements of return. This double dimension of discontinuity and return allows to underline the nietzschean structure inherent in the archaeological methodology. On the other hand, Foucault’s commitment to abandon the anthropological space, as we shall see, will be lead by exploring the possible areas of thought that the literature can open.
