  • Resumen
    • The Romans received July 18th as a dark day. This day was for them the birthday of the defeat of the Allia, suffered against a Celtic army in 390 BC. This military disaster caused the sack of Rome by the Gauls some days later. According to Livy, the Romans would have refrained from participating in public affairs during the « day of the Allia ». However, a deepened analysis reveals the complexity of the tradition of the dies Alliensis. Indeed, sources contradict each other on the official status of this day in the Roman calendar, and on the public and religious prohibitions which would have been associated with it. The re-examination of this documentation would allow to envisage in a different way the origin and the meaning of the dies Alliensis. In reality, the historians of the end of the republican era could have a leading role in the development of this tradition.
