In this article, the author reflects upon various aspects of Middle Eastern art in the early 21st century. Particular focus is given to what he describes as the growing politicization of Middle Eastern art, which has been lucrative for art dealers and auctioneers. Several Middle Eastern artists are noted throughout the article including the Syrian-Canadian artist Buthayna Ali, the Egyptian artist Mahmoud Mukhtar and the Egyptian artist Hassan Khan.
