The article looks at the mental health system in the U.S. According to the article, despite the mandates of the 1996 Mental Health Parity Act, the U.S. mental health systems are plagued with barriers to equal access and treatment for persons with mental illness. Barriers include lack of adequate insurance coverage for mental health services and high costs of psychotropic medications, psychotherapeutic treatments, and behavioral rehabilitation. The author states that to promote mental health in the U.S. there is a need for positive system changes, beginning with policies to expand mental health services to make them more comprehensive, more culturally responsive, and more affordable.
