Tenzone e ironia in Dante

    La famosa tenzone tra Dante e Forese Donati (Pg. XXIII e XXIV) ha sempre suscitato molto interesse all’interno della critica dantesca, per lo più coesa nel considerare l’episodio come una palinodia rivolta alle rime passate. Vorrei, invece, provare a leggere l’intero episodio purgatoriale sulla scorta della presenza ad esso sottesa di un’altra figura retorica: l’ironia. Essa non è mai manifesta, né all’interno dei canti qui analizzati né negli altri luoghi della Commedia nei quali se ne fa uso, come quello dei golosi. Il saggio esamina anche l’altra tenzone tra Bonagiunta Orbicciani e Guido Guinizzelli. Anche qui l’ironia di Dante si fa sentire come una critica rivolta alla poesia e alla poetica dei suoi predecessori.

    The famous Tenzone between Dante and Forese Donati (Pg. XXIII and XXIV) has always generated great interest with critics who, for the most part, are in agreement that in Purgatory Dante regrets the verses exchanged with Forese in the past and now becomes reconciled with him when he meets him. I would like to suggest, instead, that if Dante appears to be reconciled with Forese it is because the irony of their meeting cannot be easily detected. Dante does not want bring injury to Forese but he does not want to be reconciled with him either; he wants only to make fun of him. The canto, therefore, is ironic even if the irony is never clearly manifested, as in the case of the gluttons of whom we ignore the reasons of their leanness. The essay also takes into account the “tenzone” between Bonagiunta Orbicciani and Guido Guinizelli. Even here, Dante’s irony can be clearly detected in the critique of the poetry and the poetics of his predecessors.
