    Self-medication using plants, a widespread practice in France, is often promoted by community pharmacists. Indeed, during discussions with the patient, the pharmacist may be tempted to try to improve the drug-based treatment through various over-the-counter remedies, notably in the areas of homeopathy and phytotherapy. Care must be taken however, for the use of plants is not risk-free. This article recounts the case of aggravated kidney failure after over-the-counter medication containing Harpagophytum was taken.

    L’automédication par les plantes, répandue en France, est judicieusement promue par les pharmaciens d’officine. En effet, au décours de l’entretien avec le patient, l’officinal peut être conduit à tenter d’améliorer son traitement médicamenteux par divers produits conseil, notamment dans les domaines de l’homéopathie et de la phytothérapie.

    Mais attention, l’utilisation des plantes n’est pas sans risque. Nous relatons ici le cas de l’aggravation d’une insuffisance rénale survenue à la suite de la prise d’un médicament conseil à base d’Harpagophytum.
