Castelló d’Empúries is gradually being acknowledged by historians as an important town, central to the economic and cultural life of the medieval county of Empúries. This article is concerned with two facets of this crucial role of the town: its contribution to the count’s finances; and the construction of a series of palaces and fortifications that would act as the count’s residence, as well as an emblem of his power.
