How does the present make epoch ? How does one becomeaware that a breaking off is happening which sets forth in a bygone past the time which we formed one body with, which has been “our young days” ? According to Gide’s words, « it is merely when we leave a thing that we name it ». The dramaturgy of nomination is, as a matter of fact, closely linked to retrospec-tive illusion : “interwar years” in that sense is an exemplary chrononym. It nevertheless remains that “from the blind core of time” (Michel Murat) names impose themselves which contemporaries perceive as names for the present.

Comment le présent fait-il époque ? Comment prend-on conscience qu’une rupture se produit qui éloigne dans un passé révolu le temps avec lequel on a fait corps, qui a été « notre jeunesse » ? Selon un mot de Gide, « ce n’est qu’en quittant une chose que nous la nommons ». La dramaturgie de la nomination a, de fait, partie liée avec l’illusion rétrospective : « entre-deux-guerres » est un chrononyme exemplaire en ce sens. Il n’en demeure pas moins que, « depuis l’intérieur aveugle du temps » (Michel Murat), des noms s’imposent que les contemporains perçoivent comme les noms du présent.
