With the launch of its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India has passed the first test in its bid to orbit the Red Planet. Next up is a ride that history has shown to be nail-biting: only three space agencies have ever reached Mars. As well as testing the Martian atmosphere for methane, a potential sign of life, MOM will provide know-how to aid a planned robotic moon voyage. Counter-intuitively, that mission maybe more exciting, scientifically, than orbiting Mars.
