There is a planet like Earth just 12 light years away--close enough for its sun-like host star to be visible to the naked eye. That is the upshot of a model that uses fake planets to estimate the number of alien Earths that NASA's now-defunct Kepler space telescope failed to spot. Erik Petigura of the University of California in Berkeley says when one steps out at night and looks at the stars, some have Earth-sized planets with lukewarm temperatures.
