    The historical study of material culture already has a long road. In the history of science particularly, material culture gained visibility from the mid-1980’s under the influence of the book “Leviathan and the Air Pump” by Simon Schaffer and Steven Shapin who put the object at the center of their investigations. The study and discussion of material culture are now present in various fields (archeology, sociology, anthropology, history) that focus on different objects (books, tapestry, ruins and scientific instruments) in different approaches. This article intends to discuss the scope and limits of the historiography of sciences from the material culture, presenting and discussing the theoretical and methodological proposals that have emerged in recent years.

    O estudo histórico da cultura material já tem uma longa estrada. Na história da ciência particularmente, a cultura material ganhou visibilidade a partir de meados da década de 1980 sob a influência do livro Leviatan and the Air Pump de Simon Schaffer e Steven Shapin que colocou o objeto no centro de suas investigações. O estudo e a discussão sobre a cultura material estão hoje presentes em diversos campos (arqueologia, sociologia, antropologia, história) que focam diferentes objetos (livros, tapeçaria, ruínas e instrumentos científicos) em diferentes abordagens. Este artigo pretende discutir os alcances e limites da historiografia das ciências a partir da cultura material, apresentando, e discutindo, as propostas teóricas e metodológicas surgidas nos últimos anos.
